Art Therapy

What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is a treatment that combines psychological theory and art making to promote healing, foster self-esteem, increase insight, cultivate emotional resilience, increase self-awareness, enhance social skills and improve cognitive and sensorimotor functioning.

How does Art Therapy Work?

"Through integrative methods, art therapy engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone. Kinesthetic, sensory, perceptual, and symbolic opportunities invite alternative modes of receptive and expressive communication, which can circumvent the limitations of language. Visual and symbolic expression gives voice to experience and empowers individual, communal, and societal transformation." -The American Art Therapy Association answers

How does it work through Telehealth?

In person Art Therapy sessions are always individualized and the same is said for online Art Therapy sessions. First we will work together to help you or your child gather art supplies for you to use in session, creating a "coping skills tool box." Then I will design art directives around your specific treatment goals. I also offer art journal prompts or art directives to complete between sessions and explore together the following session. This is a great option if you are interested in Art Therapy, but want to utilize EMDR or CPT in session. Engaging in Art Therapy does not require any "artistic skill," or experience with art materials. Together we will create  a treatment plan to help you meet your goals and utilize Art Therapy to support you in achieving those goals!
